Do you have a favourite building or place in Dar es Salaam that you think i should draw? If so, do let me know…
Wouldn’t this building make a wonderful studio, coffee shop, book shop, lounge bar… oh dreamy on…
any suggestions?

Hey Sarah:
I think you should sketch one of the plant nurseries around town or along a main road. These pretty much function as public gardens which is nice since as you know most open spaces have been turned into nyama choma and beer parks. The one opposite the American embassy (next to the football field) is a good one, as is the one along Ali Hassan by the Mbuyu…
yay, great idea – thanks! (will try not to get arrested while loitering outside the embassy taking notes….)

Love the police station on selander bridge, though can’t remember if there is nasty concrete wall around it or not.
yep, great idea – its already on my list.. just gotta figure out a way of either drawing it stealthily or spending a while getting official permission to do so!
many thanks!

Hi Sarah,
I love your idea – I have already seen so many buildings go down in the last few years alone.
Some places that I like downtown:
The abandoned villa more or less opposite the YMCA (with a gorgeous car wreck in the garden – if only someone could make that drive again!)
The Tearoom at the corner of Jamhuri st and Morogoro – although I am not sure if the building itself is actually nice – it might be more the atmosphere.
There are a number of really nice art deco buildings. One is on Morogoro road downtown, it has an NMB office downstairs. Another one is on Zanaki st I think, on a corner opposite an indian restaurant…
This is fun to think about. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your book!
Vera
hi vera … all great suggestions – many thanks! (and yes i have wondered about that wonderful car many times too!)

What about…
- the fish market
- the City Council Hall
- the beautiful corner on Samora ave at Bridge street (I’m actually not sure it’s still there as I haven’t been to town in a while)
- The Dahya Punja library on Indira Gandhi street
- Azania Church and St Joseph’s Cathedral
I also love
- the door to the White Father’s mission (the Atiman house is on Sokoine Drive)
- and the intricate wood windows on the minarets of the white mosque on Mosque street
yay… thanks lily!
(eek this has got to be a big book…. or maybe two books…!)
yaaaaay hehehe…2 books is a good idea! The first one sounds very all encompassing then the second could be more focussed (esp taking into account reactions from people)…
In the category STREET CUISINE perhaps the roasted calamari that they sell at the taxi stand at the Kigamboni ferry.
In the category STREET TRANSPORT the egg boys: the men from the Wakuria tribe from Musoma who have moved to Dar and provide the whole city with eggs, by bike.
In the category STREET TRADE the fisherman’s village in Msasani, which has been there before Dar es Salaam was actually founded. And perhaps the Tingatinga painters.
What a great project!
many thanks anne!
have already done a mayai bike drawing (will try remember to post it soon), but will add the other two to my ever lengthening list!
