Nuwairah knew that if the day ever came to claim her prize, she would come home with a boatload of possibilities. Her insides did flips at the thought of it. It was all so glorious, the idea of being out there on a handsome dhow with no boundaries in sight. Just the spray from the waves and the salty air and an endless stretch of maybes.

Its scary how quickly Street Level is becoming a historical record rather than a celebration of Dar’s architectural gems. Today Blaschke House is being demolished. Adorning the clock tower roundabout where Samora Avenue joins Railway Street since 1907, in a few more days only the shiny mbati around it will remain. Who knows what modern wonder will then replace it.

call for writers

Following on from ‘Street Level’, ’Sea Level’ is a new body of work portraying the architectural and cultural heritage of coastal Tanzania.

The artwork will focus on the architecture of key historic coastal towns of Tanga, Pangani, Bagamoyo, Zanzibar Stone Town, Kilwa, Lindi and Mikindani as well as the typical styles, environment and livelihoods of the Swahili coast.

It is envisioned that the body of work will evolve into the creation of a book. As such, writers are invited to submit short creative pieces for consideration – maximum 850 words each.

Not wanting to constrict creativity, the brief is broad – writing can be prose or poetry and inspired by any aspect of life on the Tanzanian coast – past and present. Initial deadline for submissions is March 31st 2013.

A new project for the new year! Sea Level – documenting and celebrating the cultural and architectural heritage of the Tanzanian coast. More info coming soon, but first this image of the Old Customs House in Bagamoyo – built in the German period between 1889 and 1895. To this day the site remains a busy spot for dhows and trucks transporting goods to and from the mainland to Zanzibar and beyond.
